Popping the Uni bubble

There’s something I wanted to share with all you Uni students.

I hope you’re sat down.

Are you ready?

Prepare yourself.

The thing is…

There’s a whole world outside of your Uni campus, outside of lectures and essays and seminars and your flat mates. A WHOLE WORLD.

I’m being dramatic I know but the last few weeks I’ve began to feel quite claustrophobic in Exeter. I love my life there but I very rarely leave. It’s now over 2 months into this term and I hadn’t seen anything but the inside of lecture theaters, the small bare-brick walls of my room and the same streets and shops. Until this weekend.

I’ve been staying with my grandparents and bestfriend this weekend so that I could attend an interview for a summer job.

The trip into London on Sunday, into the vast business of Waterloo station, felt amazing. The bustle of literally hundreds of people weaving around you to get to wherever they’re going makes you feel small, anonymous but it also reminded me of just how huge the world outside of my Uni town is.

My terms are 12 weeks long, that’s a long time to stay in one place. It’s easy to become bogged down in work and the routines of Uni life but escaping that, even for a few days, has left me feeling energised and excited to return to Exeter. Guess the cliche’s true: Absence does make the heart grow fonder.

This weekend consisted of yummy food, yoga, meaningless and meaningful chats about everything and anything with my bestfriend, excessive tea-drinking, train journeys, long showers, very little make-up, lots of pinteresting and wearing PJ’s into the middle of the day. I’m now ready to head back into Uni life refreshed and with a better attitude (less ‘I hate my degree’, more… ‘I am fond of some aspects of my degree’).

I in no way want to diminish the importance of your Uni experience or the work you’re putting into your degree, I simply want to remind you that there is a world outside of your Uni town and it’s a world you are still part of, if you lift your head out of deadlines and reading lists every once in a while.

Why not take a little trip to a nearby town if you can, get on a train and go for a little explore next weekend. Treat yourself, take care of yourself and make the most of your 3 years of study.
